Whāngārā Annual Seed Harvest | Volunteer Call

Whāngārā Farms is preparing to launch our inaugural Whāngārā Seed Harvest, an annual kaupapa running each year from December through to May.

This mahi is about more than seed collection. It is about strengthening the future of our whenua — gathering, storing, and propagating native seed so that the right plants return to the right places over time.

Delivered in partnership with the Ngahere Network, this work contributes to long-term regeneration across our landscapes and supports the intergenerational vision of He Rau Ake Ake.

As we prepare for our first season, we are seeking 3–5 committed volunteers to join this inaugural harvest team.

This is a hands-on opportunity to be part of the full seed journey — from collection through to propagation preparation prior to planting.

WHAT THE MAHI INVOLVES

Selected volunteers will support practical field and nursery tasks, including:

•             Seed collection in the field

•             Careful seed handling and storage

•             Basic propagation preparation

•             Supporting the seasonal workflow alongside the Ngahere Network team

Training and guidance will be provided where needed.

WHO THIS IS FOR

We are looking for people who:

•             Have an interest in ngahere, native regeneration, or whenua-based mahi

•             Ideally bring some practical experience (field, nursery, conservation, or similar)

•             Are reliable and able to work carefully with natural materials

•             Are passionate and willing to learn

•             Value working as part of a small, kaupapa-driven team

You do not need to know everything — but you do need the right mindset and care for the mahi.

WHY THIS MATTERS

This inaugural harvest helps lay the foundation for a long-term Whāngārā seed pipeline — ensuring locally sourced seed is gathered, protected, and returned to the whenua where it belongs.

Those involved will be contributing to work that will grow forward for generations.
