Strong Stock Starts with Strong Relationships
Last week, members of the Whāngārā Farms team attended the annual bull sales, securing ten Hereford bulls for the farming operation, eight from Mokairau Station and two from Wilencote Station.
While sale day is often what people see, the real significance lies in the decisions being made behind the scenes. Bull selection is one of the most important investments a farming business makes each year, with the genetics of a single sire influencing herd performance for generations to come.
When selecting bulls, the focus goes well beyond appearance. Fertility, structural soundness, growth performance, temperament, calving ease and overall genetic merit all play a role. The goal is to identify animals that will perform in East Coast farming conditions while continuing to strengthen the productivity and resilience of the herd.
For Whāngārā Farms, this year's purchases represent an investment in the future. Quality genetics contribute to everything from weaning weights and replacement females through to overall herd efficiency and long-term farm performance.
Just as importantly, these purchases support local farming families who continue to invest heavily in breeding quality livestock for the region.
"Selecting the right bulls is one of the most important investments we make each year. These decisions influence the future direction of our herd, so we're looking for animals that will perform in our environment, strengthen our breeding programme and deliver long-term value for our owners. We're also proud to support local breeders who continue to produce quality stock for East Coast farming systems." Anthony Creswell, CEO Whāngārā Farms.
A special acknowledgement goes to Peter Greaves of Mokairau Station, whose family has spent generations developing Hereford genetics suited to East Coast farming systems. Producing quality stud stock is the result of years of breeding decisions, performance recording and careful stock management, with much of that work unseen long before a bull enters the sale ring.
The relationship between commercial farmers and stud breeders is an important one. It is built on trust, shared knowledge and a commitment to continually improving livestock performance across the region.
The purchases also reflect the long-term thinking that underpins much of the activities across Whangara Farms. While environmental restoration, infrastructure and innovation are all important parts of that journey, investing in quality genetics remains one of the most effective ways to influence the future performance of the farming operation.
Behind every bull purchased is a team of people carefully weighing up information, experience and practical knowledge to make decisions on behalf of the business and its owners.
Finally, a mihi to our bull buying team, which included a number of our farm managers and leadership team. These decisions are never made lightly. They are the result of experience, discussion, healthy debate and a shared commitment to ensuring Whāngārā Farms continues to invest wisely for future generations. Their time, expertise and dedication help ensure the right stock is selected for the right farming systems, creating long-term value for our whenua, our owners and the future of the business.
The photos from sale day captures that well: good people, quality stock and a shared commitment to getting it right.
